The holidays are here — which means road trips, family gatherings, and memories waiting to be made. Whether you’re heading out from the Dayton or Moraine, OH area or taking a longer drive across state lines, getting your vehicle ready for the journey is essential for a safe, stress-free trip.

At Dixon’s Automotive, we’ve been helping local drivers stay safe on the road with trustworthy service and expert repairs you can count on. Here’s your ultimate holiday travel vehicle checklist to hit the road with confidence!

1. Start with a Professional Inspection

Before you load up the car and begin your holiday adventure, schedule a pre-trip check with our ASE-certified technicians. We’ll perform a full assessment of your vehicle’s key systems — including brakes, battery, fluids, belts, and more — and let you know if anything needs attention. A professional inspection can identify small issues before they turn into major problems miles from home.

2. Check All Essential Fluids

Fluids are the lifeblood of your vehicle — especially during long drives and winter weather. Be sure to check:

  • Engine oil
  • Coolant/antifreeze
  • Brake and transmission fluid
  • Windshield washer fluid

Our team can top off or replace any fluids that are low or due for service.

3. Inspect Tires and Brakes

Your tires are the only thing between your car and the road. Check for proper tire pressure, adequate tread depth, and the condition of your spare tire. Brakes should also be examined for pad wear and rotor condition, as worn brakes can increase stopping distances in winter conditions.

4. Test the Battery

Cold temperatures and long hours on the road can be tough on your battery. If your battery is more than a few years old, bring your vehicle in for a quick battery load test to avoid a no-start situation during your holiday travels.

5. Lights, Wipers & Visibility Tools

Make sure all headlights, brake lights, and turn signals are functioning. Inspect your windshield wipers for wear and replace them if necessary. Confirm that your defrost and heating systems are working properly to keep visibility clear.

6. Pack an Emergency Road Kit

Even with the best preparation, unexpected delays can occur. Pack a kit containing:

  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • Jumper cables
  • First-aid supplies
  • Blankets and warm clothing
  • Snacks, water, and a phone charger
  • Ice scraper or snow brush if winter weather is expected

7. Plan Ahead & Stay Safe

Fill up your gas tank before departure and try to keep it at least half full. Share your travel route and expected arrival time with someone close to you. Check weather and road conditions before heading out.
